It
was a topic on grant writing which happened to be posted on the Kiowa tribal
page, (I am enrolled Kiowa) and it peaked my curiosity. Why? At the time, while
writing a paper for technical writing class which I was enrolled in for my
senior year of college the topic was on grant writing. Well after proposing to
the professor the idea for the topic, what came next had my curiosity now at a
very appreciative level. As an enrolled member of the Kiowa Tribe and a
person who enjoys the powwows from time to time, I thought this would be a good
time to find out how write a grant for a powwow. This is where one of the
topics at the Native Learning center became very valuable at the time.
The
Native Learning Center is funded through the Florida Seminole tribe. One of the
most and greatest feature it provides to those in the Native American
communities- the training from the seminars is FREE!! Yes that is correct, and
if you haven’t looked at what it offers like the grant writing webinar, which I
took the personal chance to watch and use. In a world where many things can
become lost real quickly, taking this opportunity as Native people and the
resources being made available through social sites, allows many to take
advantage of what can help build Native communities today.
Again,
as a member of the Kiowa tribe, a student of business, and independent blogger,
I would most definitely recommend any person from the tribes in the US to look
at the nativelearningcenter.com, and see the amazing things which many tribes
today are doing: building for the future.
Some Key areas of Focus: 5-points
1) Community Development
2) Financial Management
3) Grants
4) Housing
5) Tribal Government
There
are some other amazing things that are offered which are mentioned such as
on-site training, conferences, sustainable communities, and tuition free
seminars. So to our Native American communities take the time to visit the
Native learning center, and as brought out on the website: “One course and one
person can impact whole communities for generations”. Let’s help make the
impact in our communities.
Update:
the
interview took place in June 2014, we thank Mrs. Georgette Palmer for taking time and sharing
what is being made available to Native communities. There are many leaders
doing great things throughout Native American communities today building for
the future. NGB is honored for Mrs. Palmer’s that was given and the work that
is put into what is being done.
